Malachi 2
Saturday, January 3rd, 2009
I found a very interesting verse or two in the book of Malachi, which our “spur group” (accountability/Scripture reading group of 2-3 men or women) has just begun reading. Check this out:
You have wearied the LORD with your words. But you say, “How have we wearied him?” By saying, “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delights in them.” Or by asking, “Where is the God of justice?” – Malachi 2:17
There’s a meme that occasionally raises its head in evangelical circles – the idea that God is not looking for complete submission, but is a gracious God who is okay with you questioning him and doubting him and even arguing with him. Well, God is certainly gracious, but this idea seems a tad convenient for those of us who aren’t partial to the idea of completely submitting to anyone – we’d rather talk about “partnering with” God or “participating in his mission” rather than submission or obedience.
But check this out – God is wearied of words, specifically words that show a rather blatant lack of faith. “If God is the God of justice, why are these things happening?” But, isn’t it okay to ask these questions? To demand answers? To yell out to God why these awful things are happening?
Evidently God will only tolerate so much of that.
General disclaimer – These thoughts are not fully formed. Please let me know if something seems off or not right, and I’ll do what I can to correct. Wisdom from God is “open to reason,” says James.
